Common Boundaries® training and development

Common Boundaries partners with companies to customize programs to their needs. Through a corporate cultural study we are able to incorporate company language and concerns into the program. This is accomplished through individual interviews or group facilitation. The outcome of this study will be to understand corporate and personal issues and concerns, determine short term and long term goals, and identify problems or obstacles that inhibit reaching these goals. We strategically work with you to address issues, as well as short and long-term solutions for all areas of your company. We focus on helping you reach your goals and objectives.

'Exceptionally Relevant'

The Authentic Leadership Intensive was exceptionally relevant to my work with Wachovia. We work in a fluid environment and are frequently leading through influence, rather than leading with direct supervision. In this environment, gathering and practicing skills in effective, respectful confrontation are priceless. Debbie's workshop led us through four days of practicing the art of communicating uncomfortably. Practicing these skills raised a core competency of negotiating well and maintaining strong teams and relationships with our colleagues and partners.

The emphasis on practical skills made it easy to take what we learned in the safety of the class room and practice it in the wild world of workand it works. It is a very powerful tool.

Leadership and Teambuilding

The Secret to High Performing Teams

TeamworkMBTI type theory is vital for developing a better understanding of ones self. When applied to team dynamics, type theory provides insights that are both powerful and profound as explained in this excerpt from Introduction to Type and Teams. According to Mary McCaulley, the MBTI tool allows us to make predictions about team effectiveness based on psychological type, such as the following:

  1. The more similar the types on a team, the more readily the team members will understand each other.
  2. The more dissimilar the types on a team, the slower the understanding.
  3. Groups with high similarity will reach decisions more quickly but are more likely to make errors due to inadequate representation of all viewpoints.
  4. Groups with members of many different types will reach decisions more slowly (and painfully) but may reach better decisions because more viewpoints are covered.
  5. Teams with only a single representative of a certain preference (e.g. only one Introvert) may fail to appreciate the gifts/skills associated with that preference and may view that member as different.
  6. Teams that come to appreciate and use different types may experience less conflict.
  7. Successful teams with members of many different types promote the personal development of team members by encouraging learning from the gifts of other types.

Women's Leadership

Debra Gawrych speaking at the Banff Centre for "Women Who Made a Difference"
We believe that every organization is only as effective as the sum of its parts. Simply put, leadership will be more powerful, more intelligent, more successful when the leaders are more self-aware and then use that self-awareness to develop depth and integrity throughout the entire organization.

Participant Consulting Reactions

Here's what some participants in our programs have to say about Common Boundaries®:

Laura Hansen, C.E.O. Coalition to End Homelessness: My sincerest appreciation to you and your team for the powerful presentation you provided to us yesterday. As you could see, the homeless service providers have an unbearably heavy workload with very few resources and operate primarily in a hostile environment. Many of them are so overwhelmed by the daily demands of their jobs as to have difficulty functioning the severest levels of stress. By reframing reality and providing concrete tools for immediately dealing with the physical consequences of stress you provided all of them with immediate solutions to their most difficult problems. All program participants evaluated the training as excellent and suggested that it be available to them more often. Thanks again for another wonderful job and the flexibility to respond effectively to whatever the group comes up with. You are the best!

Cathy Hamilton, Director, Office of Leadership & Service Learning UNCG: I did have a chance to hear your luncheon Keynote and wanted to tell you what an excellent presentation! Students told me the morning presentation was really great as well.

Cathy Seaver, Effective Communications, LLC: Thanks for being an inspiring speaker at today's PWWS meeting.

Kenny Faison, Prudential Realtors: Thanks so much for coming [to Leadership Columbia] and empowering me! I can find my way out now that I know where I'm at! I signed up for the newsletter and I hope that I can continue to work with you.

Cindy Thompson, Coyne Beahm Marketing and Advertising: "You are an amazing speaker — so entertaining, so free, so engaging — I really enjoyed it and glad you invited me!!"

Linda Eckert, Procter & Gamble: "You were instrumental in helping make our event a success. We all heard a lot of positive feedback regarding your speech - liked her, great interaction with the audience."

Virginia Savelli, General Electric: "I think you were great you sent a powerful message."

Jennifer Cox, Terrace Community Living: "I feel so open and powerful at the same time. It is like something inside me has been let out. I know this would not have happened without you. If you ever have any doubt about whether you are powerful and whether you have the ability to guide people to a higher part of themselves, squash that doubt immediately!!"

Dena Harris, Women's Resource Center: "Debbie, you are an inspiring and authentic speaker. You speak your truths, while remaining fully open and accessible to the truths of others. It is a privilege to work with someone so fully committed to their purpose in life. By acknowledging, respecting, and celebrating the differences of all women, you demonstrated we are all of the same sisterhood, and moving on different paths on the same journey. Your workshop was fantastic and the participants loved it, Powerful is the Word most of them used to describe it."
